This question regularly finds its way into our support mailbox. For most projects, programming skills are essential. Since our blog is supposed to encourage creative tinkering and experimentation, I would like to briefly introduce a possibility to use our modules without Arduino or similar.
Attention! This project uses mains voltage and should therefore be reserved for electricians.
Warning! The project shown here is only for experimentation, an installation is not planned (VDE compliance!)
The required components:
- Motion detectors (PIR)
- Mini power supply 12V / Alternatively 5V power supply
- LM2596 Module
- Relay Module (1Ch)
The work steps:
- for better handling, we have soldered the mini power supply to a board as seen in the picture.
- we connect this first to our step-down module, then to the mains voltage
- setting the correct voltage on the LM2596 with the help of the pot should actually be done under load - since the modules used can be quite voltage tolerant, this will be neglected here in the example
- the relay and the PIR are connected together to the output of the LM2596, set to roughly 5V, in order to be supplied with voltage.
- as a last connection, we still have to connect the signal line of the PIR to the signal line of the relay.
- Since our relay module has a low-level trigger, we still have to adjust this (replug) using the yellow jumper on the PIR in order not to have to use a transistor.
- On the two potis on the PIR we can adjust sensitivity and switching time
